1st Corinthians - An Interpretive Paraphrase with Notes

1st CORINTHIANS - An Interpretative Paraphrase with Notes

The first epistle of Paul to the Corinthians is one of the most profound and helpful books of our Bible.  It is unique and stands by itself as the product of Divine Inspiration and one of the greatest men who ever lived.  It holds a place in the practical sphere similar to Romans in the theological.  It gives us the best insight into the life of an early Christian church with its difficulties and dangers.  It exposes the seriousness of the problems of living the Christian life in the midst of a sinful city and corrupt social order.

Paul writes with love and passion to correct disorders and solve problems in the “Church At Vanity Fair” —Corinth, the Sodom of its day.  He uses every literary device of his genius to correct the problems and answer the questions.  In so doing God through Paul speaks to the problems and answers the questions of our day. The whole letter is wonderful, but many passages are the greatest penned by man.  Among these are the supposed nonsense of the Cross and the Church, marriage, conduct about questionable things, the Lord’s Supper, Christian liberty.  The greatest hymn on Love is Ch. 13, and the greatest chapter on the Resurrection is Ch. 15.

These brief notes are the work of years of “digging”, making a careful exegesis of the Greek text, preaching and teaching the Epistle many times.  They are edited in an attempt to be brief.  If the reader is looking for a scholarly exposition in detail, he will be disappointed.  The “Study Guide” is intended to be used in Bible Conferences as an aid to public teaching.

It is impossible to give credit to all who have assisted me in this writing.  I must express my gratitude to the typists: Mrs. F. Harrell, Mrs. Kay Riddle, Mrs. Deborah Riddle, Mrs. Jan Driver, Mrs. Barbara Chambers, Ms. Paula Taylor, and Mrs. D. Lane.  Without the help of many Prayer Partners this book could not have been printed.  To the many Pastors and friends who helped, my thanks.

John Bob Riddle, DDS

Dr. John Bob Riddle (1924 – 2012) was a beloved expositor, Bible scholar, pastor and teacher for over sixty years.  Often called the Prince of Preachers by his admirers, Dr. Riddle was a friend and contemporary of such men as W. A. Criswell, R. G. Lee, Vance Havner and J. Vernon McGee, appearing often with these giants in Bible conferences and other speaking venues.  As both a scholar and pastor Dr. Riddle’s dream was to translate the entire New Testament from the most reliable and authentic original Greek sources into conversational English without losing any of the impact of the original language.  Prior to his death in 2012 he had completed 20 such “Study Guides,” several with his son, Dr. Bob Riddle, President of Pastorsworkshop. Several of the “Study Guides” offered through Pastorsworkshop have the original teaching notes in the margins.  These have been preserved for the readers’ benefit.

Though a beloved pastor/teacher, Dr. Riddle’s passion was teaching the deep truths of Scripture to other pastors, many of whom lacked the opportunity for higher education or the ability to study Scripture in the original languages.  That legacy is now continued through the distribution of his life’s work through the Pastorsworkshop and its global outreach.
