MALACHI - An Interpretative Paraphrase with Notes

Malachi is unique among the books of the Bible.  His book is the last glow in the sunset of Hebrew prophecy.  He wrote at a time when the hopes of the returned exiles had not been realized.  A disillusioned people had drifted slowly into sin.  It was his task to correct these evils.  In stripping away the hypocrisy of priests and people he feared no person because he feared God so much.

It is a message of correction and encouragement.  It reaffirms faith in a just God who will judge the wicked and reward the faithful.  Malachi foresees the coming of Christ.  As a master debater he silences his critics with an authoritative word from God.  He is on fire with zeal that would bring about a revival and lead a corrupt nation back to God.  His message is urgently needed today!

This study guide is prepared for use in Bible Conferences, group and individual studies.  It is not written for the scholar, but lay persons and pastors.  Hebrew grammar and syntax is explained where I felt it would be helpful.  I have drawn from many sources and attempted to give credit where it is due.  For the sake of space the full bibliography has been left out and only selected works listed.

My prayer is that Christians will discover the riches of Malachi’s brief but neglected book and follow its instruction.

John Bob Riddle, DDS

Dr. John Bob Riddle (1924 – 2012) was a beloved expositor, Bible scholar, pastor and teacher for over sixty years.  Often called the Prince of Preachers by his admirers, Dr. Riddle was a friend and contemporary of such men as W. A. Criswell, R. G. Lee, Vance Havner and J. Vernon McGee, appearing often with these giants in Bible conferences and other speaking venues.  As both a scholar and pastor Dr. Riddle’s dream was to translate the entire New Testament from the most reliable and authentic original Greek sources into conversational English without losing any of the impact of the original language.  Prior to his death in 2012 he had completed 20 such “Study Guides,” several with his son, Dr. Bob Riddle, President of Pastorsworkshop. Several of the “Study Guides” offered through Pastorsworkshop have the original teaching notes in the margins.  These have been preserved for the readers’ benefit.

Though a beloved pastor/teacher, Dr. Riddle’s passion was teaching the deep truths of Scripture to other pastors, many of whom lacked the opportunity for higher education or the ability to study Scripture in the original languages.  That legacy is now continued through the distribution of his life’s work through the Pastorsworkshop and its global outreach.
